Welcome and Introduction
Framing the workshop:
Why focus on our complex problems?
Scalability and Heterogeneity

"Scaling up" is a problem, and great UI's haven't had to cope with vast arrays of widely differing data. Designs to date have worked best when the data is limited, highly structured and fairly constrained in scope. Are we using buckets to deal with a firehose-sized challenge?

Adaptability and Context

What is the potential for truly influencing the user experience? How can the data drive the interaction, and not just act as the subject of the interaction? How does an application know enough about the user's goals, tasks, experience, and motivations to refine the experience appropriately?

Evaluation and Methodology

To gain the insights we need to achieve in our work, we need to understand the tools that we use when we evaluate and design. What are their strengths and weaknesses? What biases in our methodological tools do we need to be aware of?
